Kinetic Cavity Preparation, or KCP, is a drill-less technology that uses a microscopically fine powder and a stream of air to whisk away decay. With KCP, Dr. Imrek can treat early-stage decay and preserve more of your natural tooth structure. Besides tooth-colored fillings, Dr. Imrek uses KCP in cosmetic procedures and even when applying dental sealants to children’s teeth. We can apply the sealants in a matter of seconds, which works well with the attention span of most kids!
Additional Benefits of KCP
Is KCP Safe?
Yes. The tiny abrasive particles are a biocompatible substance, alpha alumina, that’s been used in food and medications for years and is the primary ingredient in several whitening toothpastes. We use only a tiny amount of this microscopic powder for each procedure, and most of it is automatically removed with our state-of-the-art evacuation system. Scientific tests show that you would have to undergo about 28, 20- to 30-second KCP procedures to inhale enough of this powder to equal the weight of one grain of table salt. The amount inhaled in a single procedure is about 1000 times less than the limit established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Is there any noise involved?
There’s no whine as with a dental drill, but there is a slight blowing sound similar to an aerosol can being sprayed. The evacuation system sounds like a quiet vacuum cleaner.
Is KCP used for every procedure?
While KCP is appropriate for a variety of therapies, it’s not right for every procedure. At your appointment or consultation, Dr. Imrek will discuss whether KCP can be used during your treatments.
